Ten of Pentacles is the last numbered card of the Suit of Pentacles, and it represents the completion of material processes.
The Ten of Pentacles depicts a man and woman under an archway, accompanied by a child (1) and an elder man sitting outside the archway, accosted by his two dogs; the child has approached one of the dogs playfully. The aged man’s robe is ostentatious; decorated with grapes, crescent moons, flowers, and some other symbols. The archway itself is garnished with two coat of arms; one showing a castle and the other showing two ships. (2) In the background, behind the archway, a large house is discernible, and the pentacles of the card are depicted in the air.
The archway, standing for passage-ways and initiations (3) symbolize a new direction or new beginnings. The child also corresponds to the new beginnings, fresh perspectives and hope. To continue, the dogs symbolize honesty, loyalty, and protection. The spear in the hand of the younger man and his posture furthermore strengthens the symbolic meaning of the dogs, emphasizing protection and guardianship. The castle engraved on the archway and the large house in the background refer not only to protection and stability but also to wealth and reward of hard work. The ships engraved on the archway, on the other hand, implies that this wealth and security has been a product of a harsh and time-consuming endeavor. The elder man’s robe, first of all, suggest that the man is still thriving with ideas and plans, and his awareness of the influences of his fertile subconscious.
All life demands struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values of life. The very striving and hard work that we so constantly try to avoid is the major building block in the person we are today.
-Pope Paul VI
Ten of Pentacles, before anything else, denotes the accomplishment of a long-term endeavor, and the successful completion of a compelling venture; be it monetary, business or emotional; and illustrates the enjoyment of the fruits of labor – such as security, wealth, pride and satisfaction. A person represented by this card, therefore, would have a sustainable success, structured mind and generosity. In the relationship context, this card indicates either a long-term commitment or yearning for it and advises to let relationships and bonds develop at their pace. It also signifies deriving the sense of completion in an established relationship. Career-wise, this card indicates the accomplishment of goals and a well-established career, which would provide much needed financial security; and signifies the abundance arising from a long-term venture or investment.
All in all, the Ten of Pentacles is the successful manifestation of material processes, and at the stage it represents; there are security, wealth, and establishment.
